The Silver Solution to Northern Ireland’s Homecare Crisis

Today BBC NI tells us a distressing story about Elizabeth Lennox’s mother Marina, who following a hospital admission was unable to secure a care package to allow her to return home- where she desperately wanted to be.

Not only this a heartbreaking story, but it is one of many. Figures quoted by BBC NI say that currently more than 3500 people are awaiting a package of care to be discharged from hospital back to their own home. We have discussed the benefits of swift hospital discharge in one of our previous blogs  Why hospital may not be the best option.

Northern Ireland has an aging population, which has increased the demand for home care services. This demographic shift puts additional pressure on an already strained system.

More and more elderly people prefer to stay in their homes rather than move to care homes, this further escalates the demand for home care services.

There is a severe shortage of home care workers. This is attributed to low wages, poor working conditions, and a lack of career progression opportunities, which make it difficult to attract and retain staff. Here at Silver Cloud Care NI we understand that our care workers are precious. We value our staff. We ensure that we pay a proper living wage, a wage that reflects the important work that they do. We offer excellent career progression and are very loyal employers.

Using state of the art digital technology, families can, with their loved one’s permission,  access their files, ensuring care is being delivered how, when and where it has been promised. Carers and families can communicate easily, giving live updates on what is happening with their loved one.

Our staff can accompany their client to hospital visits, shopping or even the hairdresser. We aim to supplement the support provided by families, ready to step in where families can’t. We aim to increase the circle of support around your loved one.

Northern Ireland has a challenging geographic spread. Its many rural areas can present a challenge for carers. That is one reason why we will not deliver 15-minute packages of care. We do not feel the “fifteen minutes” model is a success. We deliver meaningful, holistic care, it is no less than your loved one deserves.

We employ staff all over Northern Ireland, in rural and urban areas.

Families frequently bear the brunt of the shortfall in home care services, with many becoming unpaid carers for their loved ones. This can lead to financial strain, emotional stress, and health issues for the carers. In our recent blog  You Can’t Pour from an Empty Jug we discuss how the lack of support of carers can lead to burnout and stress.
